THE Umvoti Agricultural Society (UAS) hosted its annual bass fishing competition as a fund-raiser for Golf 911 on Saturday 7 November at the Jondol on the Mispah road.

Various dams in the Umvozana Valley were kindly opened by landowners. Some of these dams are fished only once or twice a year and are only open to the public for this competition.

The sunny and hot weather saw a great turn-out of eager fishermen and women wanting to make the most of the nice day, even in spite of the very low water levels in the dams.

First prize for longest bass went to Marius Fourie (53.5cm), second prize went to a junior, Francois Janse van Vuuren (47cm).

Largest carp prize went to Thomas (3.65kg) and heaviest barbel to Nico Madden (7kg). The junior prize went to Tim Gorzellok (39cm).

There were place prizes as well as lots of lucky draw prizes. Arcadia and the Catholic Church provided meals throughout the day.

The G911 Centre works much like the 911 call centres in the U.S., and deals with many of the emergencies we, as a community, face every day. These emergencies include burst water pipes, electricity outages, house and forest fires, car accidents and numerous medical emergencies. G911 serves everyone in the community and can assist in facilitating the dispatch of various emergency services depending on the situation.

The centre is manned 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by the dedicated and friendly staff at G911. This essential service however, relies heavily on the local community for its funding, with townsfolk, businesses and local farmers contributing towards this valuable service.

The fishing competition was a great success and the UAS is pleased with the generous amount of funds that were raised from the various donations and entrance fees for the competition.

Many thanks go to David Odendaal, and his team for the huge effort they put into making this fund-raiser a great event.

The UAS looks forward to seeing G911 go from strength to strength as it continues to improve and better the service it provides to all in our community.
