WHILE tuition at Hermannsburg is in English, we continue to offer German from the Kindergarten to Grade 12, drawing on decades of teaching experience - the advantage of fluency in a European language has opened doors for many of our pupils.

Starting in Grade 8 pupils are prepared specifically for the internationally recognised Deutsches Sprachdiplom (German Language Diploma - “DSD”), which has oral and written components.

The DSD is offered at two levels, DSD 1 (completed in Grade 10 or 11) and DSD 2 (completed in Grade 12). The DSD 1 level certifies a basic proficiency in the German language, and opens doors for employment with German companies, for example, while the DSD 2 certifies advanced proficiency and, provided all other subject criteria are met, entry into German universities.

Hermannsburg is one of only a small handful of schools in South Africa offering the DSD 2.

The ability to speak German is not required for entry into Hermannsburg - our German teachers are experienced at guiding non-German speakers to success in the DSD.

Our unique Grade 10 Germany Exchange Programme (GEP), where our pupils spend four weeks in Germany immersed in the German language and culture, contributes significantly towards success in the DSD.

We congratulate the Hermannsburg DSD graduates of 2017: Hugh Bouwer, Holger Eggers, Christel Brüggemann, Rhonda Christiansen, Elisabeth Tönsing, Liezl Volker and Simon Röhrs all passed the DSD 2 at the higher C1 level, while Meike Meyer, Sanele Ndwandwe, Michelle van Rooyen and Kabelo Molefe obtained the DSD 2 at B2 level.

The following candidates achieved a DSD 1 certification: Owethu Gulubela, Lydia Köhne, Clara Kohrs, Anna Kremnitzer, Angelika Meyer, Sinqobile Mngoma, Liteboho Mosheshe, Thato Mosheshe, Ntandoyenkosi Mpungose, Lihle Nyirenda, Erich Ortmann, Kirsten Ortmann, Dieter Volker and Ntokozo Zondi.
