UMVOTI Karate Academy members, under the guidance of Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize, did outstandinly well in two recent tournaments.

At the Oyama Cup competition in Durban 17-year-old Nokuphiwa Ngubane won the title of African champion – a tremendous achievement.

In addition the team brought home three gold trophies, three silver trophies, two bronze trophies and came fourth in one category.

Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize received the medal for the Best Instructor at the next tournament. Members who also displayed their skills include Fikile Mabuza who came home with the Best Spirited Fighter and two trophies. Andiswa Dlamini and Azotha Ndlovu kept their title of Champions of Kumite (fighting) and were joined by Fikile Mabuza in kata. The students did well and the support from parents who came along is much appreciated.

Umvoti Karate Academy has been given the new name of “Home of Young Lions” because of the number of youngsters involved in karate and winning, as well as representing KZN, Umzinyathi and Umvoti.

Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize, an international fighter, continues to promote and develop the youngsters. Thanks also to Senpai Lungisani Mabaso for supporting the academy. He is a former student of Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize.

The Young Lions are looking for donations to attend a tournament in Swaziland at the end of November.

Please, if you can assist members who are putting a very positive image of Umvoti out, contact Sensei Mkhize
