GREYTOWN has always been exceedingly proud of its athletes and on October 13, they did not disappoint.

Five of our athletes were selected as part of the Pietermaritzburg and Districts Team and travelled to Grey College in Bloemfontein to take part in the Grey College — Oranje Meisies Athletics meeting. Athletes from top schools in a number of provinces took part here.

Of the 34 medals won by the Pietermaritzburg team, Greytown High, despite cold and windy weather, claimed seven of these. This is 20% of the team’s medals brought home by Greytown High.

Zhane Mngadi, Bronze for U17 boys triple jump

Nkazimulo Mzolo, Gold for U15 boys triple jump

Akhona Mathonsi, Bronze for U17 girls 100 m, silver for U17 girls high jump and gold for U17 girls 200 m.

Star of the day was U16 Siyabulela Xulu who won a silver for long jump with a jump of 6,50 m. The highlight was when Siyabulela won not only the gold for triple jump, but he broke the record with a massive jump of 14,06 m. The previous record was 13,99 m.

Siyabulela is the first Greytown athlete in at least 15 years (if not more) to break a record at this meeting. He joins the likes of Wayde van Niekerk (400 m world record holder) to have his name in this meeting’s record books.

Congratulations to all our athletes for your hard work and hours of training and dedication to this individual sport.
