Greytown TVET will open new doors for youth

2018-10-03 06:02

AT long last Greytown will have its own tertiary eduction institution — its very own TVET college. This was announced by Umvoti Mayor Thami Ngubane at a media briefing held at the Municipal offices last Friday.

The college will open up many doors for the youth of Umvoti to significantly improve their lifestyle through career development, training, and learning various skills.

Besides catering for an anticipated 470 students (with the possibility of an expansion at a later stage), the construction of this further learning institution will empower the local economy as 30% of the project value will go towards local procurement.

Construction of the institution is set to begin in October and is scheduled to be complete in 15 months.

It is an even greater joy that approximately 20 young people will begin benefitting from this initiative almost immediately. These young people will form part of the construction team through a CETA skills accredited programme.

Not only will these youngsters get skills development, but they will also do project specific courses, which means they get on-the-job training, and they will get a qualification to go with it.

In February 2014 it was announced that the Department of Higher Education and Training had appointed a firm of consultants to conduct an environmental assessment of the proposed FET colleges in Greytown and other areas in the province. A college was established for a period of time in Muden, offering limited courses.
