FOR the past two years heavy digging machinery and piles of pipes along the road from Rietvlei to Greytown have been a familiar sight with contractors operating erratically on a stop-and-start basis.

As Greytown's drought tightened last year Umzinyathi Municipality, which had implemented this Greytown Water Scheme to supply raw water from the dam to Greytown Waterworks, told residents the project was now being fast-tracked to overcome the water supply problems.

Project stakeholders, Umzinyathi, engineering consultants, contractors and funders held several meetings in the latter half of 2015 to plan the fast-tracking for completion by May this year through the delivery of raw water to the waterworks.

However, the success of this plan was largely dependent on obtaining approval of the additional costs needed for acceleration.

The Greytown Gazette requested an update and the following statement was received: “The municipality [Umzinyathi] engaged the funder, Department of Water and Sanitation, for the additional funds for acceleration, but was not successful. Due to the non-availability of the additional funds construction work is now expected to be complete as per the original construction programme as specified in the various contracts.”

The Greytown Gazette was then told that the 36km raw water pipeline, with two concrete reservoirs en route, would be completed by June.

The level of Lake Merthley on Monday 22 February was 20.45%, still critically low.

Please remember every drop of this precious commodity counts.
