CONGRATULATIONS to 22-year-old Mfundo Mdletshe on being Greytown’s first Mandela Rhodes scholar.

Mfundo, who was born in Greytown and matriculated from Greytown High School in 2011, has a B.Soc Science in geography and environmental sciences from UKZN.

Being awarded the scholarship will enable him to complete his Masters in development at UKZN Durban.

Selection for this prestigious scholarship is long and detailed.

Mfundo applied in May 2015, and heard in November 2015, after a number of in-depth interviews, that he was one of 50 who had been selected for 2016.

The Mandela Rhodes scholarship grants study at a South African tertiary institution for an accredited postgraduate degree and is open to citizens of all African countries.

The scholarship is awarded not only in terms of average academic results, but also the commitment of the individual concerned to the four principles of education, reconciliation, leadership and social entrepreneurship.

On being asked what he envisaged doing after completing his Masters, Mfundo said he would like to work for the Department of Trade and Industries in the sustainable developing of job creation and economic growth.

Mfundo and other scholars are spending this week in Cape Town on a course emphasising leadership. He is very excited about this stating that the concept of these scholarships is to groom individuals to make a contribution to a better South Africa, and Africa as a whole.

“His belief to whom much is given, much more is expected.”

On behalf of its readers, the Greytown Gazette wishes this outstanding young man everything of the best for the future.
