Grondwoorde Afrikaans Poetry competition

2019-02-20 06:00

A GRADE 11 Afrikaans First Additional Language speaker at Greytown High School, Abigail van Staden, received honorary mention for two of her three poems that she entered into last year’s Grondwoorde Afrikaans Poetry competition.

Last year, 652 poems were entered by pupils from Afrikaans Home and Afrikaans First Additional Language backgrounds. Since no distinction is made between Afrikaans Home and First Additional Language speakers, it is an excellent achievement for Abigail to have had two of her poems published in the Grondwoorde Poetry Collection for the most outstanding poems.

Each participant was required to enter three poems — one for each of the following three categories: Bayete, South African Landscape and Afrikaans as language of reconciliation.

Abigail’s Bayete and Landscape poems were published.

We are extremely proud of Abigail’s achievement and wish her the best as she starts to prepare to write her poems for this year’s competition. — Supplied.
