A WEEKEND of field trips and camps started off the year with a bang for the Grade 8 and Grade 9 classes, and the prefects and boarders also.

Glen Rock hosted the Grade 8 class for three days, where they learnt the value of teamwork and trust in each other.

Although frustrated at times and tired at the end of each day, they came together, starting to forge the bonds that will make them classmates even beyond their school careers.

Grade 9 pupils went to L’Abri, where they hiked through the forest, pushed their boundaries by leaping from a waterfall and participated in many group activities, where they discovered more about their own and each other’s strengths and weaknesses, coming together as individuals and as a class.

Also in the Blinkwater, a group of day pupils and boarders were hosted by the Rommelspacher family, where the heavy mist prevented them from climbing the mountain.

Instead, they visited three dams in the area, experiencing the abundance of bird life and walking through the little-known rainforest, where remnants of a 100-year-old-trail were still visible.

Pupils also swam among the water lilies - a somewhat unique experience for them.

The prefects spent the weekend at the Harburg Retreat Centre, where they were well catered for while they debated and deliberated over the various aspects of their responsibilities for the year ahead. We look forward to a productive and successful year with them.

Thank you to all the instructors, coaches and teachers who gave of their time and expertise to expand our pupils’ horizons.
