THEY came from afar, camping, staying in local B&Bs or in the school’s boarding establishment, and were most welcome - parents and pupils from Michaelis Schule and Deutsche Schule Durban joined us in Hermannsburg for this year’s annual Mini-Olympiade for the German primary schools.
In baking sunshine the sporting spirit was at a high as teams competed in swimming, soccer and mini-cricket. Our Grade 11 pupils were fully involved in the refereeing and umpiring as well as the organisation of the event, entertaining the teams on Friday’s “games evening” on the field while parents and teachers watched from the lapha.
In the end, Deutsche Schule Durban won the swimming gala (where seven records were broken, five by Melanie Cooke) and the soccer, while Michaelis Schule won the mini-cricket. Thank you to all the teachers, pupils and parents who worked behind the scenes and on the weekend to make this event such a success.

The weekend’s Epworth Mudman saw Hermannsburg taking the field in full force. In the half-distance event, “HMB 1” (A. Whittle, E. Whittle, L. Pellow-Jarman) came first, followed two seconds later by “HMB 2” (J. Hayward, L. de Wet, J. Pope), with our other teams claiming the 10th, 11th and 15th positions. In the individual events, M. Terry came second, J. Townsend 11th, D. Volker 6th and P. Tönsing 12th. There were also three Hermannsburg Mudskippers who participated. Well done to all the teams and thank you to the teachers who accompanied and supported them.

Our primary school cricketers took on Greytown Primary and batted first, scoring 99 for 6 after 20 overs (B. Rabe 30). Greytown replied with 80 all out after 16 overs (man of the match was J. Ortmann 6 for 17). Hermannsburg won by 19 runs. In rugby news our 7s team played matches against Carter (0-29), Kloof (0-32), Wembely (0-34) and Ixopo (0-36).

On Friday, our school team will depart for Deutsche Schule Pretoria to participate in the biennial sport Olympiade of German schools in southern Africa.

The team has been training hard in everything from athletics and swimming to handball, soccer, basketball, tennis and volleyball and we wish them safe travels and a very successful four days of competition. Back in Hermannsburg, our high school pupils will follow an alternative educational programme, which includes outreach projects and informative visits to various places in our region.
