AT last they’re here. Last Wednesday our German visitors from Reutlingen arrived for the South African leg of the Germany exchange programme. They were enthusiastically welcomed by our Grade 10 pupils, despite the inclement weather (they were hoping for some African sunshine). On Thursday they joined normal lessons, and are now participating in our alternative programme while the sports teams are away.

Which brings us to early on Friday morning, before the sun awoke, when our teams headed off for the biennial Olympiade of the German schools in southern Africa in Pretoria.
At the opening ceremony on Friday evening, our head prefects delivered a polished introductory speech and the next day the sport started with the swimming gala, where our swimmers put on their best efforts.
So far in athletics, Sven Klar won gold in the 100m event, and Jemma Hayward and Clara Kohrs silver in the junior girls’ tennis. We await further results and wish the team a safe journey home today.

In other sports news, we congratulate our girls who made it through the next round of Umzinyathi hockey trials at Dundee - U14 Erin Whittle, Lila de Wet, Amy Whittle and Jemma Hawyard. U16 Ntando Mpungose, Nonjabulo Khoza, Clara Kohrs and Angelika Meyer. U18 Imke Marx, Enoch Mnikati and Zothani Dlamini.

Our school will closed for the Easter holiday on Friday, 18 March and we wish our pupils, their parents and our German visitors a blessed, restful time with safe travels to wherever they may visit. We look forward to super second term, with Schulfest - celebrating 160 years of HMB - being just one of the various highlights.
