IT’S holidays. The last week of term was very busy, with the sport Olympiade team in Pretoria and the rest of the school participating in our annual alternative learning programme.
While the sportsmen and women were competing in Gauteng, those of us in Hermannsburg heard all about life choices, poaching awareness, visited the Kranskop Magistrate's Court (thank you, Mr Jonker) and the Rupert Dittrich Museum (thank you, Mr Lütge), and studied some marine ecology (thank you, Mr Steenkamp) as well as eradicating some alien plants in our flower patch. We also visited the KwaSizabantu Mission and aQuellé bottling plant before our hosts provided a generous midday meal. Our German partners from Reutlingen joined us in the activities, and we are glad to have them visiting us as they spend time now with their host families. Thank you to all the people who made the activities possible.

Hermannsburg participated in the German Schools' Sport Olympiade, hosted this year by Deutsche Schule Pretoria. Cape Town, Johannesburg and Windhoek took part as usual, but this year we also had athletes from Accra taking part for the first time. Our 48 pupils took part in swimming, athletics and tennis, with the juniors playing soccer and handball and the seniors volleyball and basketball. Pupils did us proud as they undertook to do extra training and to learn sports that are not traditionally practised at our school.
Sven Klar won gold in the 100m sprint, our U16 boys - Sven Klar, Owen Gumede, Owethu Gulubela and Michael Glass - won silver for their 4x100m relay, our junior girls - Clara Kohrs and Jemma Hayward - won silver for tennis and our U18 girls - Meike Meyer, Charlize Vermeulen, Rhonda Christiansen and Terry-Lynn Costello - won bronze for their 4x100m relay. We also had a good number of fourth, fifth and sixth positions. We are very proud of our team and thank each team member for the extra training and dedication.

In the primary school, eye tests were conducted by the optometrist in Greytown, Ms Snyman, and most of the primary school and Kindergarten pupils were tested - thank you.
The primary school also held an aQuellé Sports Day where all the games involved aQuellé bottles in some way or another, ten-pin bowling, shooting balls off bottles with water-pistols, soccer dribbling around bottles, throwing paper rings over bottles and even making planters out of bottles and planting seeds inside (and the art department made ladybugs out of bottle-bottoms). Thank you, aQuellé, for your generous sponsorship.
