TOWARDS the end of the first term, a number of our pupils participated in various academic olympiads. We await the results of the annual English Olympiad, but can report that 11 of our pupils are through to the second round of the Zulu Olympiad, with Nongcebo Mene (92%), Sinqobile Mbambo (92%) and Nondumiso Dlamini (90%) being our top achievers in the first round.

Hugh Bouwer (85%) and Michelle van Rooyen (83%) participated in the German Olympiad, with Hugh being given the opportunity (along with 10 others from South Africa) to travel to Berlin, Germany, later this year to meet with other groups of top achievers from around the world.

A number of our pupils also made it through to the second round of the Amesa Maths challenge and we will report on their progress as news becomes available.

We look forward to a bumper second term, the highlight of which will be our annual Schulfest (school fête), at which we will celebrate 160 years of Hermannsburg this year.

On Friday, 13 May we will welcome old pupils and friends of the school to an afternoon programme of music and a bonfire and braai in the evening before hosting the Spar regional hockey tournament, high school and primary school hockey and sevens rugby on Saturday, 14 May, when we will also have the usual craft market, kiddie games and meat sales as well as lots of treats for young and old(er).

The celebrations will end with a church service on the Sunday before we bid our guests farewell until the next time.

More details will be made available on our website www.hermannsburg.co.za/schulfest
