AFTER a month of holiday, we welcomed back our pupils and teachers on Monday, extending a warm Hermannsburg welcome to some new faces too. Our new English teacher, Mr Geoffrey Allen, is already in the thick of things, having participated in the English lessons during the winter school for our Grade 12 pupils. We also welcome new pupils in Grades 9 and Grade 10, including a guest pupil from Germany, who will be spending the next few months with us and immersing himself in our diversity of cultures. We hope their stay at Hermannsburg will be enjoyable, fruitful and constructive. Our Grade 10 Germany Exchange Programme pupils will be adjusting to regular school again, having come back from Germany just in time to go straight into the July holidays, but they have all grown tremendously through their experience in Germany and established life-long connections with their partner families, learning about life and themselves in ways they probably don’t yet suspect. Ahead of us lie the inter-house general knowledge quiz, inter-house athletics (among other athletic meetings and numerous sports fixtures), the primary school play, the HMB Eisteddfod, Supper Theatre and the annual HMB Golf Day. The Grade 12s are on the last stretch before their trial examinations begin at the end of August, after which the senior certificate examinations will be upon them. We wish them strength and perseverance as they prepare for these challenges.
