IN 2015, Hugh Bouwer wrote the International German Olympiad (Internationale Deutscholympiade). His high score was rewarded with a trip to Germany from 17 to 30 July representing South Africa. In the first week he and other winners participated in various German workshops, including creative writing and presentations, before competing in the international rounds of the Olympiad during the second week, which included writing a newspaper article, delivering a presentation and competing in a quiz. Hugh reports he learnt a lot about the German language and about different cultures, as well as making friends from all over the world. He met 124 German-learning pupils from 64 countries. The competition among the seniors was equally fierce, with the age -group champions being Lydia Köhne and Joel Pope (U15), Meike Meyer and Sven Klar (U17), and Anelisiwe Kheswa and Sanele Ndwandwe (U19). Trophies were won by Amy Whittle (Mel Klingenberg Trophy - track athlete), Lydia Köhne (Ingrid Köhne Trophy - field athlete, Juanita Ortmann Trophy - victrix ludorum), and Sven Klar (Günther Köhne Trophy - field athlete, Landolf Klingenberg Trophy - track athlete, Carl Ortmann Trophy - victor ludorum, Klar Family Trophy - athlete of the day). At the end of the day Reedbuck managed to edge out Bushbuck to take the Christél Brooks Trophy (Athletics Spirit Cup) and the Rommelspacher Trophy for the winning house. A big thank you to organisers and helpers, including parents, pupils, grounds people, medical staff, teachers and athletes for thrilling us on the day.
