Hermannsburg Happenings

CASTLES, forests, ancient people, 3-D printers and science laboratories - our Grade 10s have been busy in Germany.

They recently visited Schloss Neuschwanstein, the castle built by Bavaria’s fairy-tale king, Ludwig II between 1869 and 1886.
They learnt the castle was inspired by Richard Wagner (the composer) and the ancient historical German sagas.

But they haven’t just been sight seeing - they also visited the HAP Grieshaber Gymnasium, where they watched 3-D printers producing biological models in the school laboratories, as well as observe other lessons and activities.

The Federsee was declared a Unesco world heritage site due to the remains of prehistoric ages that were found in the swamps of the area, and here our pupils walked through the Wackelwald - the shaking forest - where the trees shake as you walk or jump in the swamp.

The museum offers a reconstruction of the housing of the early stone age.

Our pupils were shown how to make fire with flint and stone and how to use the special hunting spear (Wurfspeer), which uses an extension when launching the spear to gain greater range.

Cooking was done in this early age by lining a hole in the ground with animal skin, putting water and meat into it and adding fire-warmed stones.

This was a realistic walk through a part of the ancient world of humankind.

We look forward to hearing more about the experiences and adventures of our Grade 10s.

In the meantime, we wish them, our pupils, parents and teachers) a relaxed and blessed holiday with all travelling mercies.
