IT may have been the last weekend of the last school term of 2017, but it did not pass with a whimper.

On Friday, our high-school pupils were divided into groups to engage in various “eco” and outreach activities.

Some of the groups visited local crèches, where they played games with the children, taught them some songs, decorated the classrooms with home-made Christmas decorations and shared a meal with the children.

Meanwhile, other high-school pupils were very busy wielding slashers, doing their bit to help eradicate the ever-growing bug weed “forests” in our area, along with groups on litter parade along our local roads.

The primary school focused their attention on our campus, identifying trees, birds, bugs and other living creatures according to a very well-organised programme for the day.

Hermannsburg’s Nature Club set out on Friday morning for St Lucia to take part in Bird Life South Africa’s annual “big birding day”. On the way the group stopped off at Dlinza Forest in Eshowe to walk in the forest along the aerial board walk. Friday evening saw heavy rain in the area and these continued into late Saturday morning, which meant that our early start for birding was delayed.

However, the remainder of the day was spent with our teams identifying birds at the Isimangaliso Greater Wetland Park with a lunch break at Cape Vidal.

Although the weather prevented us from seeing the birds we had hoped to see, a successful day was had by all participants.

On Sunday a special Advent service was added to the Eternity Sunday service here in Hermannsburg, and the congregation celebrated with the brass band, our school’s Viva Voce choir, pupils and other visitors to Hermannsburg.
