Congratulations to Mishka Khan (Grade 8), Sonja de Wet (Grade 9), Nqobile Sithole and Paul Tönsing (Grade 10), who made it to the second round of the Maths Olympiad. We wish them clear thinking for the next exam, which will be written on May 16.

On Wednesday last week, we started our Easter holiday and it was a bittersweet day as we bade farewell to Chelsea Simmonds, who ably directed the music department and regularly enthralled us with her musical talents, which she shared freely with our choristers and soloists.

We wish her and her fianceé every blessing as she returns to Cape Town to start a next chapter in her life.

In the new term, Johan Grobler will be the new music director. Grobler holds a master’s degree in music (Stellenbosch) and brings his years of experience at Epworth and Durban Girls’ College to the school.

Although our language of learning and teaching is English, and speaking German is not a requirement to succeed at Hermannsburg, the school still has the German language in its academic portfolio.

Last week, Birgit Eggers, a high school German teacher, conducted a trial lesson for a German booster class for three high school pupils from Pietermaritzburg, helping them gain proficiency in a European language.

We hope and trust that all our pupils are enjoying a relaxed and peaceful holiday with their parents, friends and families.

We wish the same for our teachers and the German visitors who are spending time with their South African host families, seeing our beautiful country from a perspective that tourists seldom experience.
