TWO of our pupils, Abigail Dukhi and Kirsten Ortmann, write: “From simple addition and multiplication to solving equations, our pupils use calculators in their day-to-day learning.

“Recently we attended a workshop, here in Hermannsburg, presented by Lauren Isaaks from Casio. She explained to us how to use our calculators properly and encouraged us to use our calculators only to check our answers.

“The majority of the pupils were amazed by the many things modern scientific calculators can do, while some had already realised that from experimenting with their calculators, or by reading the manual. Not only pupils, but a few teachers participated too, wanting to know the power of the calculator.

“Thanks to this workshop, some things will now be easier: our mathematics pupils will find the turning points of a cubic function, the gradient of a curve at a point and a lot else more quickly; our geography pupils now know how to use their calculators more effectively for map work; and the science pupils discovered how to use their calculators for stoichiometry. All-in-all, everyone benefited from the presentation and workshop — we had a pleasant time broadening our knowledge and can’t wait to put that new knowledge to good use.

“There is still so much more that one can do with calculators, which we still have to figure out, but we certainly feel better equipped for tests and examinations.

“A big thank you goes to our mathematics teacher, Mrs Chitsa, for organising this informative workshop, and to Ms Isaaks for presenting it in such an engaging manner.”

We congratulate our Mudman teams, who participated in the weekend’s Cordwalles Mudman. HMB Team 1 won the Mudman Series High School Challenge, having taken part in all four Mudman events this year— well done to Lila de Wet, Jemma Hayward and Kirsten Rabe for this fine achievement.

Well done also to all our other athletes who participated in the various Mudman events this year.
