IT seemed appropriate that our school holidays started on the shortest day of the year, on Friday last week — we look forward to longer, brighter and warmer days ahead as winter slowly turns to spring and summer.

In the meantime, we wish our pupils, their parents and their teachers a peaceful and relaxed holiday with travelling mercies as they spend time with family and friends, “recharging their batteries” for the next school term.

Our Grade 10s are certainly enjoying their four weeks in Germany. By now they have settled in with their host families, and are experiencing many different aspects of Germany.

In our pupils’ own words: Sonja de Wet writes: “Schloss Neuschwanstein is one of Germany’s greatest tourist attractions, attracting 1,4 million visitors every year. The setting of this ‘castle of the fairy-tale king’, King Ludwig II, could not be more idyllic. With the great golden details and the repetition of the swan image, the castle is truly extraordinary. The Grade 10s of Hermannsburg had the privilege and joy of taking a tour through this jewel of Germany’s history and it was a sight worth seeing.”

Stephanie Meyer writes: “We had the amazing opportunity to watch a modern take on the musical Aladdin, which came to life in vibrant colour, with dazzling outfits, fireworks and lively music. The musical was filled with classic German humour and was accompanied by traditional dishes which included Schwarzwaldkirschtorte and the Swabian language (Schwäbisch).”

We look forward to hearing more about their adventures in Germany in the next fortnight. — Supplied.
