FOR Christians, the egg is a symbol of the rebirth of Jesus, for, just like the hard shell of the egg is broken open so that new life can emerge, so was the rock-hewn tomb of Jesus broken open when he rose from the dead on the third day.

Lizette Larson-Miller, a professor with the Graduate Theological Union of Berkeley, traces the specific custom of the Easter-egg hunt to the protestant Christian reformer, Martin Luther: “We know that Martin Luther had Easter egg hunts where the men hid the eggs for the women and children, and it probably has this connection back to this idea of eggs being the tomb.”

The Reverend Mary Jane Pierce Norton, the Associate General Secretary of Leadership Ministries at the General Board of Discipleship, states that “there’s something about going to hunt the eggs just as we might go to hunt for Jesus in the tomb.

“And when we find them, it’s that joy that the women had when they reached the tomb first and found that Jesus was no longer there.”

So the Little Oaks also had their traditional Easter egg hunt, but before the start of the Easter Holidays.

With self-made Easter baskets, the hunt began, and the squeals of delight attested to how much fun it was to find the Easter eggs on our school grounds. Happy Easter to you all - may you find the renewal of hope, health, love and the spirit of God.
