‘Hospital management is oppressing local workforce’

2019-10-02 06:01

IT is worrying that after 25 years of democracy we still have people in managerial positions who see it fit to apply oppressive measures, ensuring that people do not gain access to what is happening at Greytown Hospital in eNhlalakahle. At this hospital we have a serious problem when it comes to job opportunities, and the person who makes it so is the one in charge of the hospital.

As the eNhlalakahle Development Committee, we have held several meetings with the hospital management regarding this matter. At some point [we reached an understanding] but when it came to a point where the hospital had to do what we agreed upon, everything changed and they did not heed the agreement. When we enquired about what the problem was, it then became clear that the head of the hospital had stopped everything.

In our last meeting with hospital management, we agreed that the 15 posts [that were to be filled by a cleaning company] would be given to eNhlalakahle people. We then asked them to arrange a meeting between [the committee and the cleaning company] to which they agreed.

To our surprise, [we received] a call from the hospital to say the meeting will not happen and the owner of the cleaning company will not have a meeting with us because, if he does that, he will be sitting with us in a meeting “as who?” This was a statement by the head of the hospital through the person who called us.

One must also point out that we understand the hospital is collaborating with a certain politician, that is not even residing at Ward 7, to ensure that the people of eNhlalakahle are being suffocated when it comes to getting jobs.

We want to assure everyone who thinks that they can stand in our way when we demand and fight for what is ours that we are going to stop at nothing until we get what we want.

FANOZI SHAIK

Deputy chairperson, eNhlalakahle Development Committee.
