Households to receive free energy-saving CFLs

2015-11-18 06:00

ESKOM’S energy-saving programme is running again and will distribute more than 10 million energy-saving lamps throughout the country over the next two years starting from this month and lasting until March 2017.

To date, more than 64 million energy-saving lamps, or compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), have been distributed, making it one of the biggest energy-saving initiatives of its kind in the world.

Umvoti, Msinga and Nqutu households will also receive free CFLs.

Eskom-accredited installers - wearing bibs with the words “Free Efficient Lighting Exchange Project” – will be going door-to-door to swop incandescent light bulbs and spent CFLs for free. Households will receive leaflets informing them of when installers will be in their area while additional information about the programme will be broadcast on community radio stations.

With installation teams having to access homes, households should take every precaution to ensure their safety. Only representatives dressed in clearly marked bibs and carrying Eskom ID cards should be allowed to enter your home.
Additional safety measures built into the programme are briefing sessions with neighbourhood watch organisations as well as SAPS police stations in your area.

• Contact the Eskom call centre on 08600 37566 or visit for full information on the areas to be covered in KwaZulu-Natal.

CFLs can last up to eight times longer that incandescent lamps and save up to 80% on energy use. Millions of people around the world are making the switch to compact fluorescent lamps.
