How did this happen?

SIR,

I READ your front-page story over and over again, thinking that your reporter and your proof-readers had made what is commonly called a “boo boo”, but then I thought, I have got time on my hands so let me go to our Greytown Library and check myself before writing to you and the others to get new glasses.

So last Wednesday, I trotted along to the library and requested to have a look at The Witness issue of February 2.

Fortunately, it was still there and, low and behold, it was not a figment of the Greytown Gazette editor’s imagination, nor a blind look from proof-readers.

There it was in black and white, the advertisement from Umvoti Municipality informing all and sundry about the meeting on Wednesday, January 31, in the newspaper dated February 2!

Is it possible that whoever placed the advertisement from Umvoti Municipality was making use of a 2017 calendar?

Is it possible perhaps that whichever senior officials gave the instructions for the advertisement to be placed, two days late, was hoping no one from Umvoti would see it?

I understand that in terms of the relevant acts, that the public should have been notified of this very important meeting.Or is the R5 760 of wasted ratepayers’ hard-earned cash just a trifle in official’s eyes when compared to R40 million in irregular expenditure?

I look forward to an official explanation!
