BUSINESS owners on the corner of Bell Street and York Street in Greytown are furious about the piles of rubbish that are gathering in front of their businesses.

“The illegal dumping has been going on for more than a year now. I have lost many customers due to the illegal dumping taking place in this street.

“People do not want to come to my business anymore because they say the place is unhygienic. The smell of rubbish and urine is unbearable.”

Another business owner in Bell Street, Saga Veaden, also complained about the pile of debris in front of his business.

“Customers don’t even want to come to my business due to the unhygienic conditions.

“[In addition], huge potholes on the pavement damage the tyres of their cars.

“We want the municipality to come and clean our streets before we lose even more revenue,” Veaden said.

Skhumbuzo Dlamini from Umvoti Municipality Waste Management and Parks and Gardens warned residents and business owners to refrain from dumping debris in town, saying: “We have noted with great disbelief that some business owners dump debris outside their businesses and then expect the municipality to come and collect it.

“Residents and business owners should contact the municipality before they demolish any structures. They are supposed to come to our offices and pay. They are ones that cause illegal dumping because they are avoiding paying.”
