It’s Comrades time

2018-06-06 06:00

IN the early hours of the morning of June 10, the traditional “cock’s crow” will set over 20 000 athletes off for the running of the “ultimate human race”, the annual Comrades Marathon.

This year is a “down” run that traverses 90 kilometres between Pietermaritzburg and Durban where triumphant runners will finish in the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The Comrades was first run in 1921 by a hardy group of 34 World War 1 veterans, including the race founder, Vic Clapham.

Of this group only 16 finished, having run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban on predominantly gravel roads. The race was founded to remember the men who had fallen in the Great War and to “celebrate mankind’s spirit over adversity”, a sentiment that is enshrined in the race constitution.

For this, the 93rd running of this great race, the theme is “Asijiki — No turning back”, in acknowledgement of the perseverance and determination to complete the ultra-marathon. Over the years, many Greytown athletes have run the Comrades and this year is no exception. The Greytown Gazette wishes all the athletes running the 2018 Comrades Marathon a successful and safe run.
