THE first annual Jaco Botha Memorial Golf Day was held at the Greytown Country Club on Saturday, 20 February in memory of Jaco Botha who died on 18 April, 2015 at the age of 23, in a car accident. His parents, Flip and Ronél Botha decided to host this event to honour his memory.
Jaco was a keen golfer who re-presented North West Province in the junior golf foundation tournaments.

It turned out to be a wonderful and memorable day. There were smiles all round when the 76 players learnt about the format they had to play. A special golf ball with a printed picture of Jaco on was given to each team. This special ball played an important role in the points scored. Some of the teams also honoured Jaco’s memory by letting the player, using the Jaco ball at that moment, to tee off first.

During the game golfers were given the opportunity to win prizes for the longest drives and nearest to the pins. We had an efficient starter in Jack Mason and everything went smoothly. Thank you to green keeper, Wally Kohne for preparing a perfect course and Elmarie Dede and the country club staff for helping out with the arrangements on the day.

Golfers returned to supper, hosted by the Greytown Child & Youth Care Centre, in the Pannar Lounge. Reverend Pieter Swanepoel, director of the centre, gave some background information about the work being done at the centre.
Marthinus Steyn, captain of the golf section and Rudi Botha, Jaco’s brother then awarded all the golf prizes.
Flip Botha sold auction items and promoted and awarded the raffle draw. R30 000 was raised on the day for the Greytown Child & Youth Care Centre, which will be used to install water tanks with electric motors to supply water to some of the houses at the centre.

Thank you to all our guests, golfers and non-golfers, who made the Jaco Botha Memorial Golf Day a huge success.
