SCHEDULED for 30 April, this is the third JG Zuma Marathon to be held. It is a qualifier for one of the world’s respected ultra-races, the Comrades Marathon, which takes place on 4 June.
This standard 42.2km marathon is becoming an important feature on the road-running calendar of KZN athletics.

Starting at Albert Falls, Mpolweni to King Edward Park, the grueling and challenging route attracts more entries each year. Last year 540 runners took part.

“Most road runners are now starting to realise that in their build up the JG Marathon comes at the right time of their preparations for the big ultra,” said Vincent Zuma, chairman of the JG Zuma Marathon.

“Around the time of our race the weather conditions are perfect for running, making the JG Zuma Marathon well-positioned and we encourage athletes to avoid the last- minute rush and register now.”

For non-marathon runners there is a 21.1km run, a 10km run and a five-kilometre run.

Winners of the men’s and women’s race will each receive R50 000. President Jacob Zuma will be at the prize giving at 12pm and will present the prizes to individuals and teams.

All finishers will receive a bronze medal, cap or T-shirt and the top 10 in all age categories will receive a gold medal, cap and T-shirt.

Shuttles will assist runners leaving from King Edward Park at 3.45am and 4.30am to the start at Mpolweni.

To enter log onto www.jgzumamarathon.co.za or collect entry forms from the following outlets - Kings Park Athletics Stadium, Durban Runner Sports Shop, Poobie Naidoo (PMB), and at the Umshwathi and Umvoti Municipality offices.

For payments, the banking details are as follows: FNB Account: 62472947583, branch code: 220426, reference: your ID number.

Once deposited athletes must email to Online@FinishTime.co.za or fax to 086 632 1129 and must retain original slip.

“We are urging runners to come down and enjoy the beautiful and inviting undulating scenic route of KwaZulu-Natal.

“We have set out the day to accommodate the whole family in a fun-filled atmosphere, while allowing serious runners as well.

“Security of everyone remains our top priority as well as great hospitality to all participants,” Zuma explained.

The event will be strictly run in accordance with the rules of the IAAF, ASA and KZN Athletics.

Food vendors are invited to host a stand at the finish at no cost.
An appeal is also made to Umvoti businesses to host a water table on the route as a marketing opportunity to promote their businesses. Contact Theresa Edwards on
033 413 9209 in this regard.

Details of road closures will be published in next week’s Greytown Gazette. As previously Greytown traffic officers and RTI personnel will monitor roads in and around Greytown and along the route.
