Kyokushin-Kai Karate hosted the Umvoti schools’ championships over the weekend. This was a big and important first for the karate academy, which is a non- profit organisation aimed at youth development.

CEO Sbonelo Mkhize and parents are committed to assisting the youth to be better for tomorrow. A total of 73 pupils from St David’s, Kammaland, Cordwall Primary and Greytown Honbu.

St David’s walked away at the end of the day as the Umvoti karate school champions with Cordwall Primary in second place and Greytown Junior third.

On the individual side Amahle Maphumulo was awarded as the most spirited fighter, Owani Mzila as the most technical fighter, Namhla Mavundla as the best fighter, most developed fighter Alondwe Ngcobo, well developed fighter Siyabonga Ndlovu, upcoming fighter Simthandile Hlongwa and Ettien Fouche and Jan Fourie were awarded the most improved fighters

Senior awards was also handed out by Shihan DB Gumede from the KZN Karate federation and the SA country representative of karate­ to Senpai Lungisani Mabaso with a dedication award and Sensei Sbonelo Mkhize who received a special award for his commitment.

It was a pleasure to have Shihan DB Gumede KZNKF, Mrs D. Turner of the Umvoti Aids Centre, Mr Dikhali principal of Zwelinjani School in Msinga at the championships.
