KWELIFUPHI Primary School’s athletics team did well in a competition held at the Mpolweni sports fields last Friday after three days’ preparation yielded very good results, thanks to the dedication pupils and staff.

Out of 10 events, the athletes obtained a first, four seconds and three thirds. Nomzamo Sokhela came second in the 1 200 m girls under 12; Thandolwethu Como came second in the 1 500 m girls under13; Nelisiwe Ngcobo was second in the 100 m girls under 11, as was Thobani Chamane in the 80 m boys under 11, while Uyanda Mbatha came first in the 80 m girls under 11.

They will represent the Greater Wartburg Ward in a circuit competition to take place in Cool Air on Friday. Mr Xulu the sports organiser, said: “We could have obtained better results if we had not arrived late.” He said the team had about 40 athletes, most of whom did not compete as a result of being late due to problems beyond the school’s control.

He thanked parents for making sure that their children participated even though the competition was announced at short notice.School principal Mrs Z. A. Gumede said: “Teachers are there to polish every talent that has been displayed”, and encouraged pupils to participate in all activities.
