LOOKING to get fit and enjoy a day out with the family?

Join thousands of fellow South Africans as they take part in the activities of the National Recreation Day which KZN MEC is launching in Greytown on Friday, October 5. The Big Walk takes place on Sunday, October 7 in Pietermartizburg.

In KwaZulu-Natal, National Recreation Day will be celebrated at Nhlalakahle Sports grounds from 8 am until around midday, while the Big Walk will be celebrated two days later on Sunday, October 7 at The Oval cricket sports grounds in Pietermaritzburg.

On National Recreation Day, the programme includes a three-kilometre walk, aerobics, children’s activities, fun games for the elderly, football, netball and indigenous games. It is an opportunity for all South Africans to get involved in active recreation activities — especially Umvoti residents — young and old.

The National Recreation Day is a result of a Cabinet declaration in 2014, which deems the first Friday of October as National Recreation Day.

The campaign seeks to change the behaviour of all South Africans and their attitude towards healthy living and physical activity.

On Sunday the Big Walk will include a five-kilometre and 10 km fun walk, starting at The Oval. There will be fun-filled activities for the young and old.

It is an honour for Umvoti to be chosen as the focus point for the day — so please residents, young and old, turn out to support this activity. People are encouraged to register to participate in both events.

Registration forms are obtainable from the local press as well as from the municipality and Department of Sport and Recreation offices at 135 Pietermaritz Street, Pietermaritzburg.

Registration will also be open on the day of the event.
