THE Umvoti Municipality officially launched its Learner Drivers’ Programme at the local municipal offices on November 1.

The programme will benefit 168 impoverished young people from all 14 wards within the municipality, who will receive funding aimed at assisting them to get learner’s and driver’s licences with the intention of upskilling them for employment opportunities and even entrepreneurship.

Spokesperson for the municipality Phindile Phungula said: “Over and above the benefiting of young people, this programme will also [assist] existing small business owners as [there] will be seven local driving school owners who will be running the programmes.

“In its efforts to empower young people, the municipality has pledged to embark on numerous other programmes that will see more young people grow from strength to strength in various fields, as is the case of the 570 young people who have already benefited from municipality-led programmes.”
