BUTTERFLIES will be the focus at Hermannsburg this weekend when many of Africa’s leading lepidopterists will gather for their annual conference and the Annual General Meeting of the society.

The Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa (LepSoc) was founded in 1983 and remains the recognised body, leading the way in research and conservation of butterflies in Africa and its islands.

This year we will be celebrating 35 years of lepidopterology, with many talks on research projects, conservation projects, publications and various reports. Members are expected from across South Africa, as well as Kenya, Uganda Tanzania and Madagascar.

LepSoc Africa works closely with conservation authorities, universities and, in particular, with SANBI (South African National Biodiversity Institute) who are tasked with the safekeeping of South Africa’s biodiversity.

Citizen science plays a large role in our successes, with huge amounts of important data to drive these project outcomes being collected and submitted by interested members of the public.

A dinner and awards evening will be held on Saturday. Delegates will be housed and fed on the Hermannsburg School Campus.
