LETCEE preschoolers in the rural areas of Umzinyathi have a tremendous advantage in receiving non-centre based early childhood development (ECD) services at their homes or in the community instead of going to a preschool or crèche.

Through this approach Letcee has improved access to early learning - currently only 10% of Umzinyathi’s children under five attend an ECD centre.

Letcee currently has 126 stipended teachers who run these programmes in their communities, reaching just under 2000 children.
Just like other preschoolers, after graduation the children move on to Grade R or Grade 1 in the new year.

This makes Letcee personnel very happy to celebrate their completion of its Abahambi programme with a proper graduation ceremony.

Independent research has shown that Letcee children cope better in the formal schooling environment than others who attend ECD centres before starting Grade R.

Two communities have held graduations so far - Matimatolo and Njangabantu.

Each preschooler also received a graduation gift - an activity book, crayons and toys.

These were generously put together by the Shalom Bible Study ladies and St Johns girls, and a big thank you to them.
