YET again a Greytonian is hitting the headlines.

Dayaram Aheer’s incredible contribution to so many facets of the community has been recognised by the Heritage Institute with a cover story in its second Living Heritage publication.

Many family members and friends were present last Wednesday when Herrmant Bhimsen presented copies of the glossy magazine and a certificate of recognition, referring to the living legend, DR, as a businessman, entrepreneur, philanthropist and “servant of God”.

Dayaram is well known and highly respected in Umvoti through his belief that “making a difference in people and people’s lives is what drives me” and his gentle humility.

Executive chairman of the Aheer Group, DR recalls the early history of this business, which was started by his father selling vegetables from a pair of baskets balanced on a rod, then a wheelbarrow, which progressed to a donkey-driven cart, and through positivity, hard work, determination to the high standards of the current supermarket, wholesale and other outlets.

His philanthropic activities are well known - thousands of disadvantaged people over the years have benefited from the Greytown Feeding Project, chaired and motivated by DR for many years.

As the recipient of this well deserved honour, DR had these words of advice - “work hard, find solutions to challenges, hold no vengeance in your heart, always give back to those less fortunate and remember that unity and loyalty are the foundation blocks of a successful future”.
