HAVING a love and passion for modelling has paid off for Sicelo Dlamini, a model from Matimatolo, near Greytown, who won the title of Mr Teen United Nations South Africa 2019 at a pageant held at the Johannesburg Theatre on September 1.

Dlamini told the Gazette that his love of modelling began when he was at Sangweni Combined Primary School.

After attending Busana High School, the current reining Mr Teen KwaZulu-Natal is now a second-year student of the Durban University of Technology, where he is completing a Diploma in Ecotourism Management Sciences.

“I represented my home town at the Mister and Miss United Nations South Africa 2019 competition where I was crowned First Prince. I would like to inspire the youth of Greytown to also consider modelling since it helps us get away from negative things such as drugs and alcohol abuse.”

He said his source of inspiration is his grandmother, who has been supporting him from an early age: “She is a woman who sacrificed a lot for me to be who I am today. She made sure I got an education and made everything possible for me, even when the situation seemed to be impossible. She has always been there for me and made me fall in love with God and have a fruitful relationship with the Man above. She also taught me how to pray and never to lose focus.”

Dlamini said his love of modelling truly took off when he first attended a beauty pageant in Pietermaritzburg.

“I knew that I belonged on the stage from then and I never looked back. As soon as I moved to Pietermaritzburg for my academics, I also started following my modelling dream because [here I have] all the resources and the right people who can help me achieve my dream.

“Change is what motivated me to pursue a career in modelling and believe in myself.

“As a model, what keeps me motivated is the love and support I receive from people everyday.

“Sometimes I get text messages from people I don’t know telling me how I inspire them with what I do and how I keep them going and feeling confident about themselves.”
