HUNDREDS of thousands rand worth of stock was destroyed in a fire that swept through Lucky Supermarket in Durban Street in the early hours of Sunday morning.

As the fire spread throughout the roof collapsed. The fire was initially reported by an Engen employee who spotted the flames from across the road and called it in just before 3 am.

Umvoti Municipal Fire Brigade were quickly on the scene and called in the Greytown traffic officers to assist with traffic control.

Firemen were able to stop the fire from spreading to stock stored in buildings at the back, but it was not possible to save anything in the store itself.
The fire brigade monitored the situation well into the afternoon as there were odd spates of flame throughout the burnt building.

At the time of going to press the cause of the fire was unknown.
It started after Greytown's first "Spring" storm earlier in the morning.
A forensic team was due to visit the scene yesterday (Tuesday) to establish how the fire had started.
