Mandela Day — help make a difference

2018-07-18 06:01

“THE children must, at last, play in the open veld, no longer tortured by the pangs of hunger,” — Nelson Mandela.

Taking this as the theme to celebrate Mandela Day, LETCEE has planned a range of activities and would like Greytonians who have not yet decided on how to acknowledge this day to participate in one or more of the following events.

Building 100 birthday towers of non perishable foods to feed children in need; or restoring the gardens of the six LETCEE toy libraries in the district by painting and upgrading the equipment.

In Matimatolo, the LETCEE Abahambi team will be providing the elderly who have to queue up for hours at clinics with a nourishing cup of soup to help keep them warm.

Eshane has organised a Mandela Day Run for Tata fun run for the children of the community. Prizes will be given to the top three of the race.

This event will also help the children of the community to know about the history of the great man and how the idea of 67 minutes of service to ones community came about. Prizes of food parcels will be given to the poorest families of this community.

The people of Njengabantu will be teaching the Veggie Bag concept to needy families in their community to enable them to have healthy food to feed their families and children.

In Mbuba, there will be a knit together for Tata at which community members will knit and sew together to create a mat that they will donate to an under privileged household to keep warm this winter.

Donations are welcome as well as active support — just 67 minutes of your time to express Madiba’s view, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.

It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”.
