ON May 20 at Mount Ernestina Combined School an Umvoti Child Protection Forum hosted a child protection event. The Umvoti Protection Forum is a structure constituted by people from different organizations, such as Department of Education, Health, Social Development, Action Aid, Umvoti Aids Centre, SAPS and local care givers. Its primary mandate is to advocate awareness strategies to deal with social ills affecting communities, especially schools. The theme of the event was “Let us all protect children, moving South Africa forward.” Presentations were on social ills such as substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, rape and fighting.

A theme on substance abuse was: “I am fine without drugs.” Pupils were also taught different types of drugs and dangers. An emphasis on teenage pregnancy was made because the rate was escalating in schools around Muden. Pupils were also told that rape is real and sometimes done by people very close to the victims. If it happens, it is very important to report it. A speaker from SAPS told pupils that fighting is dangerous and not allowed at school and in communities. It can cause serious injuries and hate among people. Pupils pledged to behave and be responsible young people. The school management and teachers were so appreciative of the event and thanked the Child Protection Forum members. — Supplied.
