THE Umvoti Municipality's waste transfer station and garden refuse dump (Dundee Road) have become major health hazards - the surrounds are permeated with the smell of rotting garbage which spills over and out of the confines of the sites.

At the garden refuse dump site rubbish has been dumped all over - on the road and around what’s left of the gate. As can be seen from the photograph vandals have walked away with half the security guardhouse and possibly the security guard too, as there was no sign of anyone.

For at least the past three years the transfer station has been a major problem and even more so in December and January every year, which raises the question of whether and when the service provider last actually transferred the piles and piles of oozing, wet, stinking rubbish which is generating major environmental problems exacerbated by the extreme heat over the past two months.

As a result of the lack of service, residents have taken to dumping wherever - Cooper Street is a prime example. As many of the complainants who have contacted the Greytown Gazette about this problem have stated: “We pay for the removal of refuse and security to protect our assets - surely it is time to stand up and demand the services we are paying for.”
