JOY, gratitude and jubilation were some of the emotions witnessed at the Greytown town hall on January 23 as 174 students from Umvoti received formal confirmation of the financial assistance awarded to them by the municipality.

Although this is an annual occurrence conferred upon qualifying students, it was the first time a formal handover with all relevant stakeholders present took place and it was a great success.

His Worship the Mayor, T.C. Ngubane, personally handed over the letters to the students after having encouraged the youth to become “agents of change” in their communities.

He congratulated the students on pursuing formal qualifications, stressing that education is a fundamental tool in changing the course of one’s life for the better.

He also pleaded with the youth to not get caught up in the lives of the big cities having left home to secure a better future for not only themselves but their families too.

Parents were encouraged to play an active role in their children’s education, as showing an interest and giving support in terms of the education of their children encourages them to perform better.

The study assistance awards that were handed over, cover an extensive range, from actuarial science to medicine and surgery, economics, teaching, engineering, dentistry, agriculture, business management, education and even a private pilot’s licence.

The mayor went on to wish all the students well in their studies and encouraged them to one day plough back into the economic development of Umvoti.
