Municipality claims ‘victory’

2017-11-08 06:01

IN a press release from the Umvoti Municipality communication spokesperson, Siqalokuhole Media, the municipality is claiming “it emerged victorious yet again” in the case brought against it by former Greytown Mayor, PG Mavundla.

This refers to the case in the Pietermaritzburg High Court lodged by Mavundla on June 30 accusing the municipality of irregularities in the new budget, which the executive committee of the municipality “had already approved on May 31”. In addition the application requested that transfer of funds to the municipality from Minister of Finance and Cogta be stopped.

The press statement points out that “this would have had far reaching consequences for the municipality and residents, as without funds, service delivery would’ve come to a complete standstill”.

On July 6 the High Court judge dismissed Mavundla’s application, with costs.

On October 24 Mavundla applied for leave to appeal this decision - the court refused and ordered him to pay all the costs involved “citing that no higher court would change the High Court’s findings”.

In concluding the press statement, Siqalokuhole Media states: “The Umvoti Municipality welcomes this outcome which is not only a victory for the municipality, but for its residents as well and will ensure ongoing service delivery.”

The Greytown Gazette was informed that following this ruling, Mavundla has indicated he would take the case to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein.
