UBUHLEBOMVOTI Special School was established in 2010 and has faced and overcome a host of challenges in order to remain in operation.

Its greatest challenge has been and still remains a permanent place they can call home; a place where a school can be custom built to accommodate the pupils’ special needs.

The school has operated from the old Council Chamber in Khomba Road, from the Wendy house in Mrs Smith’s residential home on Pine Street, the Roman Catholic Church, the old Civic Hall, the back room at the library, and has now been at the Umvoti Aids Centre since 2016.

Mrs Shezi and Miss Mthembu have taught the children for years and still continue to care for them regardless of the hardships they have endured.

The R100 school fees per month, which most times is not forthcoming, is the only income the school has at its disposal which is meant to cover the salaries, stationery and other costs.

The school requires the assistance of those with expertise in the field to assist in the caring, educating and grooming of these children, as this class of 22 has children with different disabilities.

The Umvoti Aids Centre is pleased to have been able to provide the school with the opportunity to have a fun-filled learning day at the museum on May 11.

There is so much more that these children require and should you wish to offer any assistance, kindly contact the Umvoti Aids Centre at 033 413 2745/6 or at 064 870 5351.
