New ATM scam doing the rounds

2016-02-10 06:00

A WARNING to ATM users to check the screen. Recently, when a woman inserted her card the message that came up on the screen was to ask for her cellphone number and pin code – which she dialled in without thinking.
There was a man hovering at the ATM just before she used it.

As she tried to pull her card out, realising there was a problem, a second man approached and offered to help as he could see there was a problem.

This was on a Sunday at the RA Centre and no one else was around. By the time the woman managed to get assistance to cancel, the card was gone and R1 500 had been withdrawn.

The scam victim asked the Greytown Gazette to publish this as a warning to ATM users, especially if they are on their own.
Do not use an ATM in an isolated area and do not respond to any instructions on the window that are different to the usual ones.
