THE R115 million construction of a Further Education and Training (FET) College in Greytown is underway again after angry protesters halted the project last year and early this year.

Phase one of the project resumed in May this year and the construction work is expected to be complete by July 2020.

The college, set to be an institution for training and development skills, will be the first of its kind in Umvoti. Students coming from various rural areas in Umvoti and further Umzinyathi will, for the first time, have an FET College at their doorstep.

Site manager Alfred Maponyane said the construction of the road works is currently under way, saying: “We expect to start laying the paving in October this year.

“We are on phase one of the project, which promises to be the biggest FET College in the area of Umvoti. We have about 38 workers working on the project.

“Phase one involves construction of the building that will be a workshop [centre] for students,” Maponyane said.

The administration and computer blocks are on hold at the moment until a water pipe running underground can be diverted.

Maponyane said additional buildings, including residential units, are expected to be built nearby the FET College.

The construction of the FET College recently came to a standstill for almost 14 days after residents complained about employment opportunities at the site.

Spokesperson for Umvoti Municipality Phindile Phungula said the construction of the higher learning institution is going to bring a positive change in the lives of the residents.
