AT New Hanover Prep we believe that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development.

During the last term classes enjoyed a variety of educational excursions providing rich opportunities for discovery.

Grade 1 pupils visited Butterflies for Africa, Grade 2 and Grade 3 pupils watched a free flight bird show at Umgeni River Bird Park. They climbed on ships at the Maritime Museum and ended off with a cruise around Durban Harbour.

Grade 4 pupils took a trip to Maywood Farm where they created some collages and Grade 5 pupils slept over in a cave in the Drakensberg after exploring the area.

Grade 6 pupils studied various ecosystems in the vicinity and Grade 7 pupils toured the UCL Sugar Mill to discover how sugar cane is processed.

Participation in these exciting and enjoyable outdoor activities with teachers reinforces a positive attitude to education and contributes significantly to the general ethos of a school group. Direct experience out of doors stimulates and reinforces learning across many areas of the curriculum, and the use of the outdoors encourages young people to take greater responsibility for their own learning.
