New Hanover Prep School news

CHILDREN are confronted daily with rich opportunities to solve problems and exercise their independent judgment at New Hanover Prep where they're given the chance to safely explore the world.

We aim to foster curiosity in our children and encourage them to become more flexible thinkers. We believe that children must believe that thinking is fun and want to be good at it.

Recently, for example, Grade 3 pupils were set the task of designing a creative form of water transport from commercial waste using some kind of energy to move in the water. After predicting and experimenting with floating and sinking, and performing tests using upthrust and hollow hulls, the children came up with a variety of unique designs.

They took their boats to the pool to discuss and evaluate their successes. Grade 7 pupils also had to invent their own pizzas using a variety of unusual toppings. These types of lessons form an integral part of the timetable in all grades.

Learning to think critically may be one of the most important skills which today's children will need for the future. Teaching critical thinking may even boost inventiveness and raise IQ. Children should question their thinking often, welcome mistakes, and celebrate their successes.
