ALTHOUGH roses are the flowers most often thought of as a gift on Valentine’s Day there are other flowers linked to the day:

It is said that growers “force” their rose bushes for months in order to have them bloom in time for 14 February.

• Daisies are known for symbolising beauty, innocence and purity.

• Tulips stand for perfect love.

• Alstroemeria, these long-lasting, attention-grabbing petals represent friendship and devotion,

• White lilies typically stand for beauty, class and style and are regarded as sophisticated.

• Orchids symbolise love, beauty, luxury and strength and send the message of exotic seduction

• Carnations, these ruffled blooms stand for fascination and new love.

• Sunflower, like the sun they're named after, represent warmth, happiness and loyalty,

• Gardenias are loaded with fragrance, these elegant flowers signify purity and joy, and deep, old-fashioned love.
