TOPAZ is the birthstone for November - it comes in a variety of colours.

Blue is a gift for a fourth wedding anniversary, while the golden yellow topaz is for a 16th and 23rd anniversary. The orange topaz is recognised as a symbol of friendship.

The stone also brings prosperity and happiness and is regarded as a bringer of abundance and good health.

The topaz stone is also the perfect stone in regards to the law of attraction and is said to help people reach their goals.

The topaz stone is known to cool down very quickly after being dipped in hot water - this led to the belief in the Middle Ages that victims of the plague would benefit and possibly be cured by placing topaz stones on their skin.

The topaz stone is one of the 12 precious stones in the breast-piece God ordered Moses to make to be worn by his brother Aaron when serving as a high priest. There were four rows of stones.

On the first row there was a sardius (carnelian), a topaz stone and a carbuncle, second row was an emerald, a sapphire and a diamond, the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst and fourth row was a beryl, an onyx, and jasper.

These 12 gem stones were to represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

Citrine is also classified as a Novem- ber birthstone - it is associated with hope, cheerfulness, youth, fidelity and health.

A form of quartz the stone varies in colour from the palest yellow to dark amber.

In the Middle Ages it was said to have magical powers and was worn as a talisman against snake venom.

Ancient Chinese emperors believed that wearing the stone increased their intellectual capacity and broadened the mind.

Modern day Chinese students use the stone to help them succeed in exams.
