THE new Administrative Supervisor deployed to work at Arcadia Home for the Aged aims to inject new blood into the organisation. This emerged in his interview with the Gazette journalist at the centre recently.

After a long history with local government, Sakkie Archer (62) says he is excited to take what he has learned to his new role at the home.

“I have been with the municipality in Greytown from 1999 to 2015, working as a manager in corporate services, manager for legal complaints – to ensure compliance within the municipality and ensure that it operates within the framework of the law.

“If there was something that needed to be advertised in the media, it was my responsibility to make sure that it is publicised.

“I have been involved with local government for 35 years. I started in 1980 in Namibia. I am also involved with Child Welfare Greytown.

“I think my contribution to the non-profit organisation is a calling.

“My aim is to uplift the community. I am going to use my skills that I acquired while working in local government [and apply them] to the old age home,” he said.

Archer’s main goal is to ensure the implementation of administrative systems and financial systems in the organisation.

He said the objectives of the organisation shall be to sponsor and promote services to meet the needs of, and eliminate distress among, the aged; to promote the welfare and happiness of aged persons; and to cooperate with government authorities and other welfare organisations in pursuing this objective.

The principal objective of the organisation shall be the provision of residential accommodation to persons over the age of 60 years or to persons who are incapacitated or have retired (by reason of ill health or infirmity) in a building, housing complex or village.

Archer said: “My responsibility at the centre is to compile a budget for the financial year, attend all executive committee meetings, follow up on overdue accounts, conduct staff meetings, drafting of policies, oversee Lotto Applications and implementation.”

With decades of experience in the local government and transferable skills he acquired while working in Namibia, Archer is optimist that he can bring a change in the administrative work of the organisation.

“We have senior citizens staying at the centre while others come and go. We also have the fragile section [for the aged] that require medical attention. Government departments, to a certain extent, support this organisation.

“We want to market the facility and attract other people to join the centre.

“We have several beds that are not occupied, so we want to send word out to the community that our organisation is on a drive to recruit more people who will work with us,” Archer said.

Arcadia recently received funds from the Lottery Fund to assist the organisation with the purchase of its office equipment.

“We bought an oxygen machine and replaced gutters at the centre which were badly damaged.

“We also bought high quality mattresses for our fragile residents and a brush cutter,” he said.

Archer added that the centre aims to upgrade its internal camera system.

The cameras will assist the centre in monitoring those senior citizens who require medical attention.
